I’m not a big fan of trade shows as a marketing strategy for whale hunting companies. Most of my clients, once they implement a whale hunting process, discontinue or greatly decrease their trade show attendance in favor of more productive ways of getting in front of their ideal clients.
Nevertheless, trade shows are big, big business, and in many industries it’s important to attend key shows. You want to see what’s new, renew acquaintances, check out the competition, and of course have your own booth as well.
The problem is this: very few companies can actually demonstrate a return on their trade show investment. You don’t have a system to determine goals, plan how to conduct the company’s business during the meeting, get acquainted with the right people, and–especially–conduct the appropriate follow-up to make those casual meet-ups turn into actual leads and ultimately new business. And at their worst, trade show mishaps can tarnish your reputation in ways that leaders may never know but will take years to overcome.
